Spicy Mushroom Tapas Recipe
I have a new hobby lately – watching Ayam Brand’s The Student Series online.
The Student Series revolves around Will (played by Will Quah) a typical male student; clumsy and a complete disaster in the kitchen. His sister, Sarah (played by Aishah Sinclair) is the opposite. She knows her way around the kitchen and loves to cook. Since Will is leaving for his studies to Australia soon, he is concerned that he will miss Malaysian food. Sarah decided to show him that it is entirely possible to make his favourite dishes in a few easy steps. You can watch it here.
There are 12 episodes, with 12 delicious recipes. I caught the first six episodes already and the 6th episode really captured my attention with its Spicy Mushroom Tapas. It is so simple to make that I believe even a kid can dish it out. To prove my point, I let Ethan view the episode online and surprise, surprise he said it’s easy peasy he can do it! Such a show off that boy!
This dish requires only 4 main ingredients: Mushroom, Garlic, Olive Oil and Chili Flakes (optional). We have all four at home at all times so not a problem, Ethan can dish this out immediately.
He took a can of Ayam Brand’s Mushroom and opened it.
He poured the content out into a bowl.
Cut mushrooms into half. He used a butter knife to cut those mushrooms ^_^
While he was cutting, I peeled and chopped some garlic. I also prepared some salt and chili flakes for him. Note that the ingredients are not according to the proportion used for this dish.
First, he toasted some sliced French loaf and set aside.
Pour some olive oil into a pan.
Add some garlic and chili flakes and fry until fragrant. But because Ethan doesn’t take spicy food yet, he omitted the chili flakes at this point.
Add mushrooms.
Fry for a couple of minutes. Add salt if you like.
Dish out on a serving plate. He decorated his mushrooms with cheese slices as he super loves cheese!
Ethan repeated the process with the rest of the mushrooms but this time added some chili flakes specially for me as he knows I love spicy food!
The end result is PERFECT! It’s so delicious I finished them all without leaving any for Darling who was still sleeping upstairs!
It’s the best gift ever as a mom when your son cooks for you. I’m sure now that Ethan won’t end up like Will in The Student Series as I am preparing him young! ^_^

Indeed splendid to get Ethan involving in food preparation. He will grow to appreciate home cooked more. Thumbs up.
oh mine… future chef? haha, i don’t like these canned mushrooms, they tend to have a very pungent smell, prefer fresh ones :P
Simple but good. Now you don’t need to do the cooking anymore? LOL
Nice. Wow..Ethan can cook too..good job.
