Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedure for Acne Scars
When I was younger, I suffered from bad acne. It is made worst with my active lifestyle under the sun. I was young and carefree and did not care much about my looks. But now that I am older with moon craters all over my face, I wish I had done something to control my acne situation back then. It is frustrating because after investing in hefty facial treatments at beauty salons and trying all kind of facial products, the scars just would not go away.
When I consulted my beautician, I was introduced to the currently popular Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) procedure that claims to be able to improve acne scars.
I don’t always jump into the bandwagon without proper research and upon studying it further, I learned that while PRP is quite a simple and safe procedure, it is HIGHLY advisable to get it done by certified doctors and not beauticians as it involves taking a portion of the patient’s own blood and processing it and injecting it back into targeted areas of our skin.
So I made my way to a nearby clinic after dropping Ayden of at his preschool.
I met with Dr Vanessa Leow of Premier Clinic, TTDI branch.
Consultation is free so no harm done to see what the doctor has to say about my scar condition.
Dr Vanessa explained in detail the depth of my scars and I was told that I suffered from multiple types of scars. She also make known to me that PRP will help my situation to a certain extend but truthfully I need a combination of treatments (besides PRP) to achieve really good result. One of them being subcision which I was not ready for as I haven’t done any research on it.
Since I am already here at the clinic and the PRP procedure will only take about 45 minutes -> 30 minutes numbing + 15 minutes injecting plasma into the skin, I decided to just go ahead with PRP first.
So here I am ready to get started. I was nervous for sure as this is my first time experiencing needles on my face. I have never even experienced acupuncture so yeah, nervous is the word to describe me at that very moment.
As nervous as I was, I am still able to record the entire procedure myself. I did ask for permission to record before we got started.
My make-up was removed and numbing cream applied.
The entire numbing process takes about 30 minutes.
I remember listening to Justin Bieber’s song playing in the room and the next thing I know I had dozed off..
I was gently woken up by the therapist to inform me that Dr Vanessa will draw my blood now.
I was surprised at how quickly Dr Vanessa managed to get my blood out. All it took was one quick prick and she got what she wanted.
I was even more surprised that I managed to record this myself.
I dare not even look when my blood was taken in the hospital or even during my annual health check but I DID THIS!
I sometimes find it fascinating with the things I do just to ensure that I am able to share this with you guys, my beloved readers. Haha.
My blood vial is then placed in this centrifuge machine. The blood vial is spun at an intensely high speed.
The spinning causes the blood to separate into layers.
Dr Vanessa harvested the plasma and discarded the rest.
Dr Vanessa then proceeded to inject back the plasma into targeted areas of my skin.
A hand-held massage vibrator is used to distract me from the procedure. Not that I need it though as I don’t feel any pain at all. I can even keep my eyes open and record the entire process so really, no pain whatsoever for me.
PRP has little or no downtime for me. I had a little redness on my face which subsides very quickly.
Overall, PRP is an especially safe treatment option with no risk of allergic reaction because it is your own blood that is injected back into your skin.
