Taman Emas Kopitiam (Peng Hwa) Jalan Gottlieb
Ok now I have some time to continue my post on our recent Penang trip. We shall talk about the assam laksa I had there.
On our second night in Penang, we went to Northam Beach on our own for dinner. The food there was so horrible we left everything unfinished. Their laksa was simply horrible with the texture of their noodles being too soft that they just melt in your mouth (not a good thing). It’s like they have been boiled over and over again. It was a nightmare eating the food there. Definitely a tourist trap there, that place.Â
The next day, we met THE Penang food blogger Ken and I almost cried telling him what horrible experience I had eating at Northam Beach Cafe so he brought us to Taman Emas Kopitiam at Jalan Gottlieb to try their asam laksa.
Ken and I. Ken is THE Penang food directory. If you are ever planning to go to Penang, do browse through his food blog for references and ideas. I on the other hand, had the priceless privilege of him driving us around for food, food and more food :P

I was surprised when Ken brought us here because we actually passed by this place so many times during our first 2 days here. If only I knew earlier we won’t be driving so far to Northam Cafe the day before >_<
Yes, asam laksa with popiah! Look at the shredded fish in the gravy. I love my laksa with lots of ’tissue’ texture and this is just great! LOL!
So this is how they eat popiah in Penang. Soak it in the laksa broth until it is not so crunchy and into the mouth it goes. Yums! Just like people in Sitiawan, Perak eat their wanton in laksa broth, here, popiah in laksa broth is equally delicious!
We also ate their char koay teow. Fried to perfection with sliced chinese sausage and prawns, it’s just right. I also noticed that it is slightly sweet and I was told that Penangite likes their food a little bit to the sweet side.Â
Ken ordered this chee cheong fun for Ethan. I don’t remember having a bite of this but I guess it must be good because Ethan almost finish it despite us having just had our breakfast at the hotel prior to meeting Ken.Â
It was a satisfying meal we had here. It’s not crowded and easily accessible too. Ken then brought us to go buy biscuits, egg tarts and cendol! Later lah I blog about those kay? :D

Not bad not bad, i look thin and tall in your photo hahahaha :P, that’s all i care :P
I miss Penang laksa!!
I have eaten the assam laksa at this place before in 2011. Really nice! CKT slightly sweet, don’t quite like it. Good food! Can see all of you eating at this place are very happy.
Tsk, Northam Beach is not for Penang local food sampling. Go for the grilled fish and German sausage there next time. Although I have a feeling there won’t be a next time for you there :P
Definitely no more next time at Northam Beach. So horrible I am scared for life!
Go to Penang, meet celebrity blogger…so sombong, don’t want to come to Sibu. Sulk! Sulk! I wonder how much these cost now – have not been to Penang for a long time.
Arthur, I am not too sure how much all these cost now as Ken paid for them :(
