My Chinese New Year Celebration in Melaka
I had a very fulfilling Chinese New Year celebration back in my hometown this year. We went back on the second day of CNY and I managed to visit almost everyone except my Uncle Benny as we had run out of time and needed to rush back to KL as school reopens quite early for Ethan.Â
It is the Year of the RAT and since we have 3 rats at home, we celebrate them with this RAT yee sang.Â
The 3 rats at home – my eldest sister, her husband and their first born are all rats so we let the rats do the tossing first :D
3 little rats on the plate. I must fully utilize my rat biscuits.Â
It was an impromptu set up. My eldest sis sought my help to prepare the yee sang and I casually said we should have a RAT yee sang since it is the Year of the RAT. She laughed but was surprised when I actually arranged it to look like a rat using whatever ingredients in the container.Â
And so we tossed to a better year ahead.Â
I took a lot of pictures this year. Somehow I feel like documenting the families I meet this time because you know, huge family gatherings are getting quite rare these days. Chinese New Year is never the same after the passing of my grandmothers. They were the magnet that pulls families together during the festivities but after they are gone, it takes a lot more of effort to reconnect.
I don’t get to see my father’s side of the family as often anymore (though we are connected on Facebook) so it is really wonderful to see them at my parent’s place when we arrived on the second day of CNY. Below is the picture of my Dad’s youngest brother and his family. We spent lots of time gambling together in the past years :D
In the evening, we attended Baba President Dato Ronald Gan’s CNY open house complete with lion dance and all.Â
My Mom’s bro, Uncle Harry supposedly spending the CNY with his children in KL this year but managed to return to Melaka on the second day so we surprised him with a visit on the third day.
After we took the above picture, the rest of my cousins and relatives arrived so we took another group picture.
Yup, such a havoc we are trying to squeeze everybody in. Haha.Â
Back at my parent’s place… my cousin, husband and their daughter. My second sis and her daughter are in the above pic too.Â
And then the gang from Uncle Harry’s place arrived at my parent’s place so that calls for another group pic.Â
Later in the evening, we visited my mom’s bro, Uncle Frankie and his family. Do you notice some same familiar faces? Yes, from Uncle Harry’s place to my mom’s place – those are my cousin brother, my cousin sister, her husband and their son.
From my Uncle’s place, we proceeded to my aunt Maureen’s place (mom’s younger sister) and yes, you see all the familiar faces again – my cousins and their kiddos.Â
We gambled the rest of the evening but can’t post pictures here. Not wise to post picture evidence as we do not want to spend our CNY in jail :P
We also visited my mom’s youngest brother, Uncle Soo but he just got up from slumber so I don’t think it is nice to take a picture of his sleepy self. Lol.Â
I am satisfied this year. Besides visiting my uncles, aunts and cousins, I get to spend lots of quality time with my parents and siblings. Hopefully we can keep this up and do more next year.
May the Year of the RAT be a good one for us all. Huat ah!Â
