Home Grown Project
I love nature, plants and gardening. I wish for Ethan to love them as much as I do. To make him understand the circle of life of a plant, I started a home grown project with Ethan about two weeks ago. Our first project consists of growing spring onions and tomatoes.
For the spring onions I get Ethan to place a red onion into the pot and help him cover it with soil. Two weeks later, woo lah, nice spring onion growing!
And then there is the tomato planting. What I did was to take a whole tomato and break it open in front of Ethan. I let him scoop out all the slimy seeds and scattered it all over the soil in the pot. Two weeks later, tiny shoots started showing.
What I enjoy most about this project is to see how excited Ethan is every day. Each time after his playground outing, he will rush home to look at the plants. He can even say ‘onion‘ and ‘tom-to’ and will get the water hose to water these two plants. The funny thing is, he will only water these TWO plants. He will not bother my other plants and will only water them after I pester him to do so.. Sigh!
Just to share with all the parents out there, never under estimate your child. I never expected Ethan to show a very strong interest in this project, but now, looking at how he is able to care for the plants himself, I am most happy.
I am now thinking of what to grow next. Any idea?
