Bleeding Nose in Toddler
Ethan’s nose bleed again today. This time around we are very calm when it happened because this is the 3rd time it happened. I remembered the first time his nose bleed, cant really remember how old was he, but I know he was barely 1 year old. It was 2.30am in the morning. Darling and I just slept like.. what.. one hour ago? Ethan woke up crying in his crib. Me, blurry eyed, woke up to check on him. To my horror his face was full of blood and so did his crib and pillows. I gasp and Darling woke up. We panicked. My legs went weak at the sight of so much blood. Darling carried Ethan out of his crib and wiped away all those blood, but the blood refused to stop flowing. Ethan was crying profusely. I ran down to prepare his bag and off we rushed to the hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, the blood stopped flowing. The doctor examined him and gave him the clearance. We were afraid that he might knock himself in the crib or something that caused all the bleeding, but thankfully, nothing of that happened and the bleeding was caused by something else.. like.. heaty.. maybe? We don’t wish for it to happened again but when it did, we now know what to do and not panicked…
Whatever it is, do not tilt your child’s head up high to stop the blood flow as this may cause choking. Just hold his head upright, let the blood flow and wipe it away. Try not to let him swallow his own blood. And if he does vomit with traces of blood later, it is okay. This is the blood that he had swallowed earlier. If possible, get an ice pack and place it on his nose bridge. (But I find that difficult to do as Ethan will be very restless throughout the whole commotion). And air the room and make sure it is well ventilated.
Most importantly, be calm.
