Homegrown Organic Spinach in Pots
Okay, so you have seen my homegrown organic okras and grape cherry tomatoes. Today, it’s time for me to introduce my garden of spinach. They are all grown in pots as I’ve mentioned in my previous post, I do not have any land for gardening. Again, I did not purchase any seeds to start my spinach garden. What happened was I bought a bundle of spinach from my favourite grocer shop. Those spinach comes attached with their roots. I cooked all except one. I planted it in my pot. I let it grow really old until it started to grow flowers.

Actually I did not even know those are flowers with seeds inside. I was wondering what those cute little ‘pom poms’ are.
I plucked and shook those fluffy balls and to my surprise, little black seeds started dropping out of those ‘pom poms’.
I sprinkled those seeds in a pot and a couple of days later I saw little baby spinach growing. Wow. This is amazing!
I transfered those cute little babies into separate pots and let them grow. They grow very quickly.
In just weeks, I have many beautiful, leafy spinach to feed my family. The seeds I collected from the mother tree is enough to last us a life time!
Spinach is relatively easy to grow so when I run out of pots I recycle my empty milk cartons instead.
I am trying to reduce my carbon footprints as much as possible and Ayden is all happy to help me :D

I do not use any fertiliser for my potted plants. What I used though is good compost soil that we make ourselves. Little Ayden’s job every week is to mix the soil thoroughly. I have a really good little helper :D
By the way, I received so many private messages asking me how my spinach mother plant looks like. Here it is:
It’s taller than 23 months old Ayden! LoL! I don’t eat this okay, I just keep it for her seeds :D

Silent because i seldom comment. Just read mah. It certainly took efforts to harvest own seeds, and grow them. But those seeds can really last a life time? haha
Haha, well, they’ve lasted this long which is quite long. My spinach is actually one of the very first greens that I planted. Those that I featured in this blog are dunno which generations ody.

eih, interesting!! i didn’t know spinach has got flowers, haha!! but the flowers on the plant look like caterpillars and one may go and remove them!! see, now you have okra and cherry tomatoes and spinach in your garden, no need go pasar already lah~~ :p
…I just came across this website and I love gardening..I have some herbs, kang kong, okra,sunflowers parsley and I was wondering..what grocer is that? And, I tried using tea leaves as fertilizer and it actually worked..although some of my okra plants have yellow leaves..do you know what is wrong?
Come, send me the seeds, please. I would like to try and plant my own even though I know it sure is gonna die one. My girl loves spinach, dunno why it is not easily available here. I would always buy when I see it. Maybe so laku, everyone wants to be Popeye…or all sapu by the restaurants. :(
May I know where do you get the soil & flower seed? For the soil, do we make ourselves?

You can buy compost soil in any plant nurseries or make your own too. As for the seed, I got it from the spinach I bought from market and planted till really old until it bear flowers and seed.

Wow! I didn’t know spinach can grow so tall (referring to your mother spinach plant) and the milk carton idea is fantastic! You have green fingers also among your many talents.
Everything I grow like dying slowly, I think either the soil got problem or my house feng sui not really welcome the plants >_<

Mine is a super simple method. I have some huge pots which I keep at a corner of my porch. I layered it with soil, wet paper and dried leaves. Everyday, I throw my kitchen vege/fruit waste into it. I keep it covered with maybe only an inch ajar for ventilation. Mix the soil from time to time. Once the pot is full, I mix everything thoroughly and leave it for a couple of weeks up to a month untouched, only to occasionally spray some water to keep it moist. I throw my kitchen waste into another pot and start all over again. After a month when my first pot is done, I use the compost for my garden.

One question abt this compost, does it attracts insects like ants and also vermin ? And after it’s ready, how do you use it ?
And your coffee egg tea, do you put coffee and egg shells in hot water first to steep or just room temp water and what is a typical ratio? Thk you in advance !

The compost does attract insects but once it is ready, it does not. I just add them into my potted plants periodically.
For the coffee and egg shells, I usually fill up the bottle with egg shells and just pour coffee and room temperature water into it.
