Homeschooling a Toddler – Colour Sorting
Continuation from our first homeschool activity of beading/threading, we are going to proceed with the second activity a toddler can do at home today. It is never too early to expose a toddler to the world of colours. If you watch your toddler closely, you’ll discover that he/she will usually have a preference towards a particular colour. Always start with that colour to capture his interest.
My 16 month old Ayden loves playing with building blocks. He started off by throwing them around but please, good habits must be cultivated from young. We reprimanded him from the very beginning that he is not supposed to throw those bricks everywhere. We must understand though that he finds it amusing that with just a fling, that block can ‘fly’ across the room hence we do let him explore with it for a while before guiding him with a better way to handle those blocks.
One activity we can do with his coloured building blocks is to introduce colours to him.
What we’ll need is just some containers and coloured bricks so our toddler can sort them according to their colours. I used my old Chinese New Year snack dish plate for this :D
I placed a brick in each compartment and encouraged Ayden to fill up the rest. He did not get it right the first few times as he has not understand the concept of sorting those bricks according to their colours. Perseverance is the key here but it need not necessarily be done in a day. You just need to spend several minutes a day to instill the understanding to your toddler. He should be able to get it right after several attempts or days.
I noticed that Ayden is attracted to the green bricks so I encouraged him to sort that colour more to build up his interest.
He finally got it after a few attempts.
Here is a video of him sorting colours. You may notice that after he gets the concept, he is not only sorting coloured bricks but also any other items of the same colour.

I love this activity. Kids love colours so this is a good game to play with them. I also just started on this color sorting with Jamie. Haha.
Oh, so the 2nd activity is to get them to sort by colours. You must be very patient to get him to understand the concept after doing it a few times.
