Eating With Your Fingers

I grew up eating my meals using my fingers. I don’t really like using fork and spoon. But all that changed during college as my mates all ate ‘poshly’ using fork and spoon so I don’t feel comfortable using my fingers in front of them. I was always self-conscious during college as I was the only ‘kampung girl’ among those town girls :(

Eating with one’s hands is a technique that can be quite clean when done correctly, but may require a degree of practice. My parents still eat using their fingers and they actually enjoyed their food more that way. I too eat using my fingers whenever I am back in my hometown and recently, Ethan has been questioning me why I do that. I told him that it is more enjoyable to be able to FEEL your food before eating them :P

Today, Ethan and I attended a Hari Raya function in Shangri La Kuala Lumpur and that boy saw many people eating using their hands. He decided to use his fingers too and asked me if it is okay to do so. Of course I gave him the green light. And here he is, first time eating using his fingers.

He ended up enjoying his tomato rice so much that he kept on asking me for second and third helpings just so that he can keep on using his fingers to eat. After a while, I noticed that he puts his entire hand inside his mouth! Aiyo! He said he ‘terlampau shiok already’! LoL!

When the Daddy fetched us, Ethan excitedly told him what he did and the Dad shook his head in disbelief as he himself has never eaten using his fingers. Hehe.. I guess Ethan adapts to changes easier compared to the cinapek Dad :P

You didn’t teach him to “press press” the rice with his fingertips then push into the mouth with his thumb? I like to eat with my fingers only if I’m eating Malay or Indian food. Somehow, when you are eating Chinese dishes, not so shiok (for me la).

  I find it nicer to eat Malay and Indian food using fingers compared to Chinese food too. Chinese food I use chopstick like a pro!

me terbalik lah.. i don’t know how to eat rice using my fingers properly, so have to use spoon all the time lah.. i heard using fingers actually taste better hor?? >.<

Haiya, Merryn! That’s not so kampung style,lah. I dah jadi jadi orang bandar pun still feel so syiok makan dgn tangan. Betullah tu, mmg finger lickin’ good.

  Tapi kan, tau-tau jer la, kite orang kampung datang ke bandar macam jakun. Tengok orang pakai sudu kite nak pakai tangan pun malu :(
