Springy potato (Tornado potato)
Last weekend, I finally did something I should have done ages ago – walk in Jonker Walk! :P Being a Malaccan it can be quite embarrassing when everyone else is talking about it while you have NO idea whatsoever about it!
Finally on Saturday evening, we step foot in Jonker Walk.. Woo hoo!
Jonker Walk baby! Look at the crowd!
I found something LONG and SPRINGY and immediately I fell in love with it! :P
I did not know what it was for I’ve never seen anything like it before! My nieces told me that it is springy potato on skewer. Cool! My nieces are more well-versed than I do *blush*
Since I’ve never eaten that before I just have GOT to try it…
Oooh.. I thought this is a rather naughty bunting, the more I HAVE to try it! :P
Scout around and found out that there are several stalls selling these snacks. I wonder which stall should I go to?
When faced with this kind of dilemma, you need to adhere to Submerryn’s guide to good food rule #5:
5) When you are in a foreign place and are unsure of where to dine, look for the place with the longest queue.
Followed by rule #6
6) Make sure the queue consists of locals and NOT tourists! If you see locals queuing, you know you’ve found a treasure.
Followed by rule #7
7) If there are long queues EVERYWHERE, look for the cutest looking dude manning the stall. You can never go wrong!
So after going through rules #5, 6 and 7, I found my treasure! :D
Potatoes
The machine that is used to slice the potatoes
The potatoes are then pulled through a skewer and stretched.
There! My cute dude! :P Here he is bathing the potatoes with batter. Aww.. look at how sexy he does it! :P
The potatoes are then deep fried in hot oil
And removed once they are golden
The cute dude will then sprinkle the seasoning of your choice (mine is cheese) and there you go – Tornado Potato! :D
My niece loves it too! Menyesal I bought two sticks only! Next time must go there and look for this cute dude again. I tell you, the rest of the stalls I saw are manned by Oriental looking aunties! wink! wink!
